What are mods in Minecraft and how to use them?

A screenshot - Minecraft with a mod
A Minecraft mod is a modification of the game, which brings different changes. There are really a lot of mods for Minecraft, and their existence is one of the reasons for the game popularity. Gamers may become a bit bored of the “clear” game, but mods will refresh their gaming experience, generating a new wave of interest to Minecraft. Also, mods give a possibility to set game process according to players’ ideas about the game.

So, what do mods do? They do very different things. They can change properties of existing game objects and add new ones. They modify methods of the character’s interaction with the blocky world. They even bring new physical laws to the virtual Universe. A mod is a change of the game code, so it may make almost everything if its creator is skilled enough and has a powerful fantasy.

To run a Minecraft mod we need a special program – Forge is good and commonly used, so we use it in Very Good Games. To install Forge, download the installer from the official page, according to your Minecraft version, activate it, and then, during launching the game, choose the game version with the Forge.

To install a mod on Minecraft, take mod’s file (*.jar or *.zip) and put it into the folder \mods in the game folder \.minecraft. Examples for different OS are:
  • for Windows XP – “C:\Documents and Settings\*UserName*\Application Data\Roaming\.minecraft\mods\mod1.jar”;
  • for Windows 7, 8, 10 – “C:\Users\*Username*\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\mods\mod1.jar”;
  • for Linux: “~/.minecraft/mods/mod1.jar”;
  • for MacOS X: “~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods/mod1.jar”.

(~ - is the main directory)

The mod appears in the game window. We should click on the “Mods” button to see them and activate one for our game.

Before trying out different mods, it would be nice to develop gaming skills in the “clear” Minecraft, which is often called “Vanilla Minecraft”, i.e. the game without modifications. You can do it even for free during 5 demo days. And our Minecraft tutorial series will be very useful in this process!
