Very Good Games at EGX 2019 (photos)

A photo report with some Very Good Games from EGX 2019 in London
Visiting gaming events is a nice method to entertain yourself (of course), to meet interesting people, and to play many great games. In October 2019, the author of this blog (I mean myself, Eugene) visited EGX in London. I would like to share some of my impressions and show some of the photos.

This post is specifically about the games at EGX 2019 - not all of them, but those caught my attention.

First of all, let’s figure out what that EGX is. It’s the biggest game event in the UK, conducted since 2008. Since 2018, German gamers have their EGX Berlin.

Unlike Paris Games Week that seemingly tries to cover the European game market or Gamescom that is obviously a worldwide event, EGX is dedicated to the particular countries, the United Kingdom and Germany. So, at these trade fairs, we can feel the most promising new games - at least for these regions and potentially far beyond their borders.

After EGX 2019 in London, I would highlight the following game titles. Probably, you will find among them good ideas for your exciting gaming time.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Ok, this game is not a new one - the original version was released in 1997 for the PlayStation consoles. Still, the developers put so much effort into making FFVII suitable for the modern devices (PS4) that the new version looks and potentially feels absolutely different.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of the central games of the big PlayStation area at EGX. The release is planned for the 3rd of March 2020. Here are the photos from EGX 2019:

Luigi’s Mansion 3 and MediEvil

On one hand, these games are super different. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a Nintendo Switch exclusive. MediEvil is a PlayStation 4 game. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is about catching ghosts. MediEvil is about slashing zombies, skeletons, and other mystical creatures with a powerful sword. But on the other hand, the games are of the same kind - funny, colorful, and super entertaining, for those who like mysterious adventures but avoid horrors and unnecessary seriousness in games.

Both games are available now. Here is the post on Very Good Games about their release. And here are some photos from EGX 2019:

Pokémon Sword and Shield

This is one of the most anticipated releases of 2019 - the first core games of the Pokémon series on the Nintendo Switch. Naturally, the area with the demo was super popular among the EGX visitors.

It was a short play session with a maze in the Water Gym and a battle with the Gym Leader (yep, Pokémon could take their Dynamax form). The release of Pokémon Sword and Shield is planned for November 15, 2019.

You can also check out the post on Very Good Games about all the other core games of this series - “Pokémon universe: games, regions, and generations

Concrete Genie

This is a charming game about a boy who covers walls of his hometown in fantastically beautiful pictures. You don’t have to be an artist to make magical images here. The game gives all the necessary tools - they appear in the inventory while completing the story.

Concrete Genie is out now for PlayStation 4. It was the best game for me at EGX 2019:

Dreams

Dreams is another PlayStation 4 exclusive, and it is a very special game - it allows creating new games without difficult coding. Dreams is still in Early Access but the community has already created lots of virtual adventures.

Very Good Games has a post about Dreams and Mario Maker.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

This game was released in September, and still, it was present at EGX - as another installment of the super popular series and one of the reasons to purchase the Nintendo Switch Lite, a portable only version of the console (the game and device were released on the same day).

Link’s Awakening is a remastered version of the old GameBoy game. It looks amazing and got a positive reception from players.

Legends of Runeterra

Riot Games, the developers of the most popular MOBA, League of Legends, have presented their new product - the card game Legends of Runeterra. You might remember a similar project of Valve, the developers of Dota 2, who tried and failed with Artifact. Of course, the gaming community will compare Legends of Runeterra with the most successful card game, which is Hearthstone from Blizzard.

The first impressions of this game are positive, especially because of the promise to minimise the role of randomness in the game matches. Still, it’s better to wait for the final version to feel all the aspects, including the monetization scheme.

For now, you can pre-register for testing Legends of Runeterra on the official site.

Death Stranding

At EGX, this product of Hideo Kojima wasn’t playable. The visitors could watch the gameplay video with the comments of the famous game designer. Still, Death Stranding got lots of attention - people were thrilled by all the hype about the game.

Death Stranding will be released on November 8 exclusively for PlayStation 4, so gamers will be able to understand what this game really feels like.

Cyberpunk 2077

This is also a very big gaming project, this time developed by CD Project Red and planned for April 2020. It will invite to a dangerous world of potential future, where humans can have robotic body parts.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

The fights in this game look chaotic and flashy but they are definitely not so “serious” as battles of some competing titles (such as Injustice 2). Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a continuation of the popular series, and it’s good for fans of this anime style.

At EGX, the visitors could play through the short demo, and the mechanics feel quite promising. The release is planned for January 17, 2020.

Cris Tales

Among indie-games, this one was the most noticeable. It’s really gorgeous and has an interesting idea of showing the past, present, and future of the virtual world at the same time.

Tears of Avia

It’s a colourful indie game with turn-based battles in a charming anime style. The game is planned for the future, and it may be interesting for those who love this kind of fantasy.
